Construction production in the euro area fell by 1.3% in June 2026 compared with May 2026, while production in the European Union decreased by 1.0%, according to first estimates from Eurostat.
The monthly decline follows a period of growth in May 2026, when construction production in the euro area rose by 0.2% and the EU grew by 0.1%.
In the euro area, the monthly decrease was reflected across all sectors, with building construction falling by 0.9%, civil engineering by 1.4%, and specialised construction activities by 1.8%. Within the EU, building construction and civil engineering both declined by 0.7%, while specialised construction activities saw a 1.7% drop.
Among Member States with available data, Slovakia recorded the sharpest monthly decline at 4.6%, followed by Hungary at 3.9% and France at 2.9%. Romania saw the most significant growth at 4.9%, while Sweden and the Netherlands recorded increases of 2.0% and 1.0% respectively.
Comparing June 2026 to June 2025, production in the euro area fell by 0.7% on an annual basis, whereas the EU recorded a 0.2% increase.
The annual sector analysis for the euro area showed a 6.5% decrease in the construction of buildings, though civil engineering and specialised construction activities saw slight increases of 0.3% and 0.2%. In the EU, building construction fell by 4.9%, while civil engineering grew by 1.4% and specialised construction rose by 0.5%.
Spain experienced the largest annual decline among reported Member States at 8.5%, followed by Hungary with a 5.0% decrease.
