Aviation has long been a symbol of courage and innovation, with the lives of countless aircrews shaping the course of history. The short film Angel Fleet seeks to honour these legacies, particularly the sacrifices of combat pilots and their families. Directed by former airline pilot Tristan Loraine, the film delves into the profound emotional costs borne by aviation communities, both during World War II and in the decades since.

Speaking about the film’s journey, director Tristan Loraine said, “As a former airline pilot who has lost and known many aviators, I wanted to make a film that pays homage to all these lost aircrew, especially those who lost their lives in combat. Crews that have now joined ‘Angel Fleet’ – This is how this short came about and I am very grateful to everyone who helped make this short film possible, especially my Executive Producer, Herb Jackson Jr.”

The film is set in rural West Sussex and intertwines personal grief with the historical significance of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, nicknamed “Sally B.” The B-17, an enduring symbol of WWII aviation, serves as both a character and a setting in the narrative. As Europe’s last airworthy Flying Fortress, it evokes the bravery of the airmen who flew perilous missions during the war, often at great personal cost.

Speaking with reporters this week, Executive Producer Herb Jackson Jr, highlighted how the film came together: “Tristan truly excels in gathering support for the film. His skills in securing unique locations and attracting talented individuals have been invaluable. He has successfully engaged organizations like the B-17 Preservation Trust, led by Elly Sallingboe, the Farlington School, and The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Additionally, the South Lodge in West Sussex, which served as a stunning backdrop during filming, played a significant role in our efforts.”

Produced by Fact Not Fiction Films and Executive Producer Herb Jackson Jr with the support of the B-17 Preservation Trust, Angel Fleet follows the story of a family grappling with the loss of its patriarch, a test pilot who perished in a crash. The narrative is as much about the resilience of the living as it is a tribute to those who have gone before—a reminder of the enduring impact of aviation on human lives and families.

Since its release, Angel Fleet has soared through the film festival circuit, earning a number of award wins for its score, performances, and storytelling. Now, it has been officially submitted for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Live Action Short category, with its creators hoping to bring this poignant story to a global stage.

The film’s recognition underscores the continuing relevance of aviation’s legacy. From the heroism of WWII bomber crews to the innovations of modern pilots, Angel Fleet bridges the past and present, keeping these powerful stories in the mainstream.
